What is an anagram?

An anagram is a word or phrase you make by rearranging the letters of another word or phrase. Each letter is used once. The word listen, for example, is an anagram of silent. Two words that share the same letters, in any order, are anagrams of each other.

An anagram solver takes a set of letters and returns every valid word you can form from them. It does not have to use all the letters. Most solvers, including this one, also return every shorter word you can build from a subset of your input.

A short history

Anagrams have a long tradition in wordplay. Greek and Roman poets used them to compliment patrons. Medieval scholars used them to hide claims and dedications inside titles. Galileo announced his discovery of the phases of Venus with an anagram in 1610, so he could stake priority without publishing his result. Today, anagrams sit at the heart of Scrabble, crossword clues and word-tile mobile games.
